Experience has proven the postcard accomplishes a great deal and can save an advertiser a lot of money in the process. Because only one piece (the card) is involved in the mailing, you have only one piece to design, one piece to write, one to print, and one to mail.
Currently, the post office allows a single postcard, up to 4 ¼ x 6 inches, to mail at the postcard rate. Therefore, your card mails first-class for about the same price as bulk-rate, standard class mail if you keep it to these dimensions.
Another advantage to the postcard is that because you have less to write, print, and produce, it can come together quickly and cost effectively.
Mailing a first-class postcard is a great way to check or audit your mailing list, too. With first-class postage on the card and your return address in the upper left hand corner, the U.S. Postal Service returns the card to you if it cannot be delivered, or if there has been an address change. Remove the appropriate names from your list and update the others. This is absolutely one of the most inexpensive, mailing list audits you can do.
Another format is the double postcard which carries the same inexpensive, first-class postage rate. Think of this as two connected postcards. This format gives you more room for your offer, and includes a postage-paid, business reply postcard that your prospects can use to respond. Including a business reply-postcard, with space for them to make a purchase or to request additional information, is another way of saying that you expect a response.
Whichever format of postcard you choose, be sure to design it so that it includes strong teaser copy or a powerful headline on the front, and an equally strong, right-to-the point offer on the back.
